greetings – auburn table tennis club  -

welcome – joining us the past wednesday, aria shahmirzadi, finding auburn with the help of abhijeet lal, thank you very much!

nice to see jackson and mom teresa “regular” monday open players, also josh tyson (sans son josh), this past monday.

looking for an additional night to hit – jz has just opened a location in citrus heights – started last tuesday and will run until further notice on tuesdays – 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.   we checked it out for the opening and can report the following:  great wood floor (double gymnasium); 10 tables (7 of them brand new, and i mean brand spanking new; they took the wrappers off them on tuesday).

“when:  tuesday from 7:30pm ~ 10:00pm

where: rusch park community center gym. located on 7801

auburn blvd, citrus heights, ca 95610

(on the nw corner of antelope rd and auburn blvd.)

$5 for adults, $3 for juniors age 17 or under”

format will include plenty of open play.  stay tuned for more details.  it was a full house for the grand opening last tuesday.

wed rr – group 3:  chuck feyh looked mighty strong, sweeps the table.   group 2:  patrice tournier, looking might invincible, goes 5-0, but not without going to games 5 with matthew blom and tyler spesick.  group 1:  tom spesick takes the table with a 3-1 record.  reports from the medical staff tending to john hanna 24 hours a day (well, at least the mental health staff) – it’s a bad back and he is not to play for at least another week or two.

annual club meeting:  february 26, 2011 – 10am time for our annual elections and open discussion on matters of interest.  check out the “admin” page on the web site if you would like to see what the officers and directors positions are all about.  all positions are “open,” meaning you can nominate anyone (including yourself) for a position.  it is nice to rotate some of the duties, so keep that in mind.  might be your time to answer to the higher calling … .

nominations are requested - send an email to lgscott@hughes.net (larry scott, our club secretary) if you would like your name, or someone else’s to be on the “short” list.  if you have a topic or specific question you would like to have on the agenda, send that along too, or feel free to talk to bill k., tom s. or with larry scott as well (if you can’t make the meeting but have some suggestions or comments or criticisms).  the meeting will be held at bill k.’s house; directions on request.  to facilitate a head count for the lovely gift bags (just like they give at the oscars) and for food and the many cash prizes and raffle goodies, do please shoot an rsvp to larry as well, so we know if you will make it.

all players (monday and wednesday) are considered “members” of our club, and all are invited and encouraged to attend this annual meeting.  as with all meetings concerning table tennis, the discussion will be brief and entertaining, carrying on the philosophy of “more play, less meeting” (the club mantra).

for wed. night, - if you will be late (after 6:45 pm), be sure to call   tom at 530-613-0101 or bill (916-275-0899) and let them know.  if you reach us, we will get you on a table.

greetings – auburn table tennis club  -

welcome – joining us the past monday, newcomers chris and konner macias, another father-son combination.  also hitting monday neeraj lal, who frequents sacramento but was enticed to check us out …   glad to have you all in auburn!  james therriault, seeking extra training for a team competition on january 23, also paid us a visit for open play monday.   tony moskwa – thank you for doing the set up monday, even if it was only because you were accidentally an hour early.  we know in your heart you agree that this beats the tar out of pickle ball …  tell rick close we know he feels the same way too.

attc is on facebook, if you have not found it already, take a look.  photos and comments are showing up; seems like an easy way to connect.

wed rrjz dished out some humility on table one, and we presented awards to the 2nd half 2010 “best record” and “most improved” players.

congratulations.  nikolai, thank you for bringing the russian chocolate wednesday, this will be a most favorable consideration in future awards.  in fact, it may be a condition for all future awards.

rr results – jan. 19 - table 1:  jz reigns supreme again, although there is no shortage of challengers eager to try their luck and/or skill.   table 2: john hanna reported grave concern and more than a little sweating getting by tyler spesick, 3-2 (and a similar report was heard from grant), and john and dave ganguly go 4-1 in matches, with john hanna winning the head-to-head battle, to take the table.

table 3: the back and forth duel between larry scott and nikolai z. continues.  this week, maybe it was the chocolates, but larry hit enough “sweet” shots to win from his second seeded position.  nice to see chamy poveda for a round robin!  whenever you can make it, chamy, come on over.

february 26, 2011 – 10am – our annual club meeting will be conducted.  time for our annual elections and open discussion on matters of interest.   past year’s meetings have been punctuated by searing personal attacks, airing dirty laundry, smear campaigns, ballot stuffing allegations and … oh, wait a minute, that was the election in november … sorry, just confused for a second there …    no, our meetings are held with only two fundamental objectives:  brevity and food.  we do discuss anything and everything, however, and we do elect officers and directors (check out the “admin” page on the web site).   all positions are officially (and unofficially) “open,” meaning if you are not careful and very nice to people, you could possibly end up being elected to just about any position.

seriously, though, we are a small club but 6 years in the making, and if you think you or someone you know might be a good candidate for a role, let us know.   nominations are invited (and requested!), send an email to lgscott@hughes.net (larry scott, our club secretary) if you would like your name to be on the “short” list.  if you have a topic or specific question you would like to have on the agenda, send that along too.  the meeting will be held at bill k.’s house; directions on request.  all players (monday and wednesday) are considered “members” of our club, and all are invited and encouraged to attend this annual meeting.  the more input and participation, the better.  new players, old players, young players and veterans, all should chime in, if you can make it.  more to follow on this meeting, in the next news.  if you have questions, corner bill, tom or larry, anytime.

for wed. night, - if you will be late (after 6:45 pm), be sure to call   tom at 530-613-0101 or bill (916-275-0899) and let them know.  if you reach us, we will get you on a table.

greetings – auburn table tennis club – now on facebook  -

yes you heard right – attc is on facebook and you are cordially invited to jump on the superhighway (does anybody call it that anymore?) and see what the fuss is all about.  thank you tom spesick for setting this up.

covering two weeks in one “news”   new players this past monday – denise hansen, like many of us, returning to hit ping pong balls after a few years off …  always fun to update new players to the “games to 11, serve changes every 2, best 3 of 5” format.  ellen tezlaf also found us monday, and we learned from her of a so cal player (her father) named cal klinger – who probably has hit with some reader (shall we say a “seasoned” reader) of this news.  he would have been a staple around southern california in the 1970s.   ellen showed some mighty good hitting in her own right, and we believe a healthy paddle upgrade will be coming in due course.

a number of “regulars” still gone on trips; we look forward to their return.  preliminary reports from the uk are that john hanna managed to find his old club and beat a few girls  (one a  top 20 national uk player in the under 18 category) …  but we await the comprehensive analysis from the horse’s mouth.  we are optimistic that the story will be dramatically embellished in the re-telling, the further we are from live witnesses to the events.

round robin – january 5th – thank you larry scott and anson k. for coordinating this week of play.  group 1 was dominated by sergey tsvor; group 2 won by its 4th seed, the underdog, larry scott; and group 3 saw elan seagraves advance on a 3-1 tiebreaker with chris pratt.

round robin – january 12 – group 3 – chuck feyh battled to 4-0 for the advance to table #2 next week.   in group 2 – seeded third, but playing to first place, at 4-0, bob hemming will hit on table 1 next week.  congratulations bob – 1st time, we believe, for you to blast away on table #1 (from the published statistics and anecdotal recollections).

group 1 – all was going according to “plan” and seeding, except for one match, which permitted bill k. to eke out the table.  the usual cash considerations were promptly paid.

following rrtwo tables of doubles matches, with 4 teams and then a 5th team joining in.  hang on a minute, this might get interesting.  doubles “smack talk” ?!  this has the makings of an old fashioned bloodbath.  stay tuned.   i think i hear a “king of the hill” challenge in our future.

for wed. january 19th – presentation of 2nd half awards!  winners - claim your prizes.   losers, show up and heckle, that’s what we’ll be doing and it’s more fun with more hecklers.  rotting fruit is optional.  plus we will shoot a few photos and it’s always nice to have a fine looking group moping about missing the winner’s circle.

quick recap on the 2nd half winners (top 3 get their choice from a newly stocked grab bag of dang nice gear from table tennis only):

thanks again jz and table tennis only – linked at our website.   we hope jz can join us the 19th; keep your fingers crossed; he is the top rated player in the club, so always a great pleasure to see if we might get a game or two off him in round robin.

for wed. night, - if you will be late (after 6:45 pm), be sure to call   tom at 530-613-0101 or bill (916-275-0899) and let them know.  if you reach us, we will get you on a table.
