Greetings – Break out the Snow Gear - Auburn Table Tennis and Ski Club   -

Just under 20 this past Monday and again on Wednesday, settling in to good playing numbers and a variety of levels.  Thank you John Hanna for spending an hour plus working on basic skills with the youngsters Monday.

Annual Club Meeting:  This Saturday - February 26, 2011 – 10am Snow showers may keep a few away, but we will proceed nonetheless.  If you have comments, questions, discussion topics, anything you might want to have kicked around, shoot an email and we will do so.  No magic to our club – we hit ping pong balls and hope to keep doing so, and hope to keep having young, old, new and seasoned folks join this group.

Also, reminder – Sacramento tournament March 26.  Entries due next week.

Round Robin Report:

Group 4Jon Saunders, relishing victories across the board, goes 4-0 and off to table 3 next week.  Kevin Taber may have been bitten by the Table Tennis bug, 3rd week in a row for Round Robin, and sources report his hitting is improving with each game.

Group 3 – A group of 4 players, all within 100 points of each other, so upsets were not unexpected.  Chebu Herrick needed 5 games to get by Michael Martin and Mark Copeland (welcome back Mark!), and 4 games to get by Chuck Feyh, to take the table.

Group 2Nikolai Z. and Abhijeet L. both took some scalps, but all players, it can safely be said, worked hard simply to avoid being stung by any smash coming over the table from Tyler Spesick.  With 3-1 results, Grant C. makes it by Tyler   this week.  If you want a taste of what’s in the cards, check out a Monday evening, where last Monday Tyler blasted Tom 3-0, and others fell prey to his vicious methods.

Group 1Nets and edges in game 5, at “just the right moment” were a small but helpful part of a 3-2 victory for Bill K. and a sweep of table 1.   Could it be all opponents were promised Starbucks double lattes at the annual meeting?

USATT Membership – If you need to renew (or join) for tournament purposes, see Bill K.  We can do this through Auburn Table Tennis Club and save you a few bucks in the process.

For Wed. night, - if you will be late (after 6:45 pm), be sure to call   Tom at 530-613-0101 or Bill (916-275-0899) and let them know.  If you reach us, we will get you on a table.

Greetings – Auburn Table Tennis Club  -

WE ARE OPEN MONDAY FEB 21ST!

Welcome, more new playersTorsten and Roland Ullrich, brothers and keen new players, hitting with us Monday (joined by their parents Meinhard and Ilona) and enjoying a bit of hitting and coaching from James Therriault, visiting us during the Sacramento Monday closure.  Open Play Monday, by the way, also featured Mateo Tournier and Jackson Meadow – so a total of 4 players under the age of 13 at our club – the youth of America, finally starting to come around.  You better show up soon and play these kids while you still have a chance to avoid embarrassment.

Annual Club Meeting:  This Saturday - February 26, 2011 – 10am Thank you to those who have RSVP’d.  Brief meeting and a few nominations have trickled in:  Michael Carlson for the Orientation (and Monday opening crew), among others.  If you wish to send along a discussion topic, and can’t attend, send us an email.  Check out the “Admin” page on the web site if you would like to see what the officers and directors positions are all about.  All positions are “open.  Nominate anyone (including yourself) for a position.

Wed RR – The return of John Hanna to playing form, welcomed by most.  A pretty busy evening with scads of rating points being moved around.

Group 3Kirk Gibson, 4-0 and losing no games, for his ascent to Table 2.   Group 2 – 10 matches, only 5 played to seed.  That’s a lot of upsets.  No calls heard for umpires, SWAT team or “Sheriff’s Standby” so all appeared to be played in good spirits.  Low seed in the group, Larry Scott, takes number 1 with 3-1 record (well done Larry, this is certainly in part due to your continued service to the Club as Secretary).   Abhijeet Lall continues to play above his apparent ranking, now up 212 points in less than 2 months).   Tamara Chappell is up 175 points, if you are counting.

Group 1 – This was looking like a “be nice to the retiring President evening” until mercilessly spoiled by John Hanna.  However, Bill K. managed 4-1 and saved a winning finish on the table.

Sacramento TournamentMarch 26th, 2011 – If you would like information, check out our website.  Many club members will play in Sacramento.  This is a great one-day event, and easy to get to and a good introduction to tournament play if you have not played before.

Welcome, more new playersDavid Black (thank you and long time no see to Ben Wolken, bringing David for our Wed. Round Robin), Dennis Szuszka and Steven Pettit, and our youngest “new” player – Elias Seagraves, hitting round robin with that irrepressible grin – a sure sign he was having fun.

Wed RR – 20 strong, 4 groups of 5 players.  Sweeping Group 4, and a little bit proud we suspect, Tamara (the Tamslam) Chappell.   Sweeping Group 3 (losing only 1 game) -  sporting a legal paddle, and inspiring fear in Group 2 next week – Abhijeet Lall.   Group 2 – the only group playing according to seed – another sweep, this time Matthew Blom, yielding not even 1 game.   Group 1 – not playing to seed, Tom Spesick makes it 2 weeks in a row on top of the group.   Welcome back Patrice – the Won/Loss results don’t tell the whole story – or even a small part of it – taking Sergey, Bill and Grant to 5 games – that’s tough play.

Still no sign of John Hanna, even with a promise of letting him organize the Round Robin while recuperating from his bad back.  John, the offer continues …

January is behind us, and it is certainly a little early, but check out those “Trends” so far – 2 players already up over 100 points.  And these are a couple of regulars, by the way.

Annual Club Meeting:  February 26 (Saturday), 2011 – 10am Your attendance is desired and invited!  If you can’t make it, do please send along an email if you wish, with comments, suggestions, discussion topics, and/or the like.  Check out the “Admin” page on the web site if you would like to see what the officers and directors positions are all about.  All positions are “open. Nominate anyone (including yourself) for a position.  The board voted itself a 200% raise last year, meaning everyone received an additional glass of water at the meeting.

Send an email to lgscott@hughes.net (Larry Scott, our club Secretary) if you would like your name, or someone else’s to be on the “short” list.  Feel free to talk to Bill K., Tom S. or with Larry Scott as well (if you can’t make the meeting but have some suggestions or comments or criticisms).   If all is well as far as you are concerned, and you are delighted about all aspects of the club, well, nothing wrong with sharing that feedback too; it does not hurt to know we are meeting the needs of the players.

The meeting will be held at Bill K.’s house; directions on request.   If you will attend, please RSVP to Larry, so we know how many will be present.

All players (Monday and Wednesday) are considered “members” of our club, and all are invited and encouraged to attend this annual meeting.  The meeting will be short.  Filibustering is prohibited by good taste and common sense (funny, they don’t employ either of those in D.C.).

Looking for an additional night to hit – JZ has just opened a location in Citrus Heights – Tuesdays – 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.   Wood floor (double gymnasium); 10 tables - Rusch Park Community Center Gym. located on 7801  Auburn Blvd, Citrus Heights, CA 95610 (On the NW corner of Antelope Rd and Auburn Blvd.) Cost:  $5 for Adults, $3 for juniors age 17 or under.

For Wed. night, - if you will be late (after 6:45 pm), be sure to call   Tom at 530-613-0101 or Bill (916-275-0899) and let them know.  If you reach us, we will get you on a table.
