Welcome to Spring Weather Auburn Players

Congratulations: Several ATTC members had a good showing at the Sacramento March Open this past weekend. John Hanna came in 2nd in the U1850, Nikolai Zavastitsa came in 2nd in the U1550 and Tyler Spesick made it to the semi-final in both the U1700 & U1850 events while also pulling off some wins against much higher rated players and his USATT rating should make a noticeable jump!

Round Robin Group Size: Thank you to all who responded to last week’s question! In the email responses I received, there were some that liked the groups separated by rating and some that liked it split by even groups, with the possibility of playing against as high rated as possible players, but pretty much everyone wanted as large of a group as possible.

I think trying for 5-6 in each group is good and possibly that some nights all matches will not be played, especially by late arrivers and those matches should be played in order as much as possible, but the matches that cannot be played will not be counted. We want to complete each group’s matches every week if at all possible, so please try to arrive on time. I also think giving the previous week’s group winners the option to move up, regardless of rating differential is the best policy. If the winner would rather stay back in a probably more competitive group, that is fine as well.

We want to include as many players as possible, but If a player will be late to the RR, they must call, text or email Tom or Bill before 6:45, earlier if possible, or we won’t be able to include them.

From time to time, we may also change up the RR groupings and have a mini tournament style of play. Notice will be given prior to these special occasions.

Round Robin results for 3/30/2011:

Group 1: Bill Kochenderfer has a good night and goes 4-0. Matthew Blom pulls off an upset in his Table 1 visit as well.

Group 2: Larry Scott goes 4-0 and can get his shot at Table 1 next week.

Group 3: A very competitive Group 3 as Mark Copeland goes 3-1 and gets the group win.

More rain and more play at the ATTC -

Welcome new player Fred Eshpeter to Wednesday’s Round Robin. Also paying us a visit for the first time in awhile, Doug Vaughan and Chris Pratt.

Round Robin results for 3/23/2011:

Group 1: No clear winner as Grant, Bill and Tom all go 2-1…

Group 2: Matthew Blom goes 4-0 and moves up to Table 1 next week.

Group 3: Chris Pratt hands out some punishment and goes 3-0.

Group 4: Chamy Poveda goes 3-1 to win the group while Anthony Amara gets some good wins and also goes 3-1.

Good Luck to all of the ATTC players this weekend at the Sacramento March Open… I think we’ll have a good showing.

Round Robin Group Size: Some weeks can be a little more challenging in setting up the groupings for the RR. Depending on numbers, what do the Auburn players prefer? Larger groups of 6 if possible or smaller groups of 4? What if ratings have a large variation? Use that as the break point to keep similar levels together even if that means a group of 6 in one group and only 4 in another or just make the groups as even in number of players as possible, regardless of rating? Input from members is appreciated. Email me or join in our Facebook discussion on the subject. We can’t please everyone every week, but we will do our best.

For Wed. night, - if you will be late (after 6:45 pm), be sure to call Tom at 530-613-0101 or Bill (916-275-0899) and let them know. If you reach us, we will get you on a table.

Hello ATTC players -

A big “Thanks” goes out to Bill Kochenderfer for his fine leadership as President of the Auburn Table Tennis Club the last two years. The club has prospered and Bill’s accommodating and always friendly attitude has been appreciated by all! Bill will continue to be a big part of the ATTC as he carries on as club Treasurer and regular player. I hope my weekly “news” will be at least half as witty…

Have any pictures, videos, stories and/or comments about the ATTC? Post them all on the Auburn Table Tennis Club Facebook page!

Music Night? I have been asked if we could let people play music while they play. What are everyone’s thoughts on this? Monday open play would be most appropriate, maybe once a month in one or both rooms? Bring a favorite CD… Send me an email and we’ll see what the response is.

Round Robin results for 3/9/2011: With each of the three groups closely rated, No groups play out to seed with many minor upsets along the way.

Group 1: Sergey Tsvor sweeps the group without dropping a game!

Group 2: Tyler Spesick goes 4-1 and wins his chance to play on Group 1 next week.

Group 3: Michael Martin wins the group while only losing 2 games.

Missing for awhile, hope to see you back soon at the ATTC: Sam Seo, Doug Vaughan, J.P. Solly

For Wed. night, - if you will be late (after 6:45 pm), be sure to call Tom at 530-613-0101 or Bill (916-275-0899) and let them know. If you reach us, we will get you on a table.

Greetings - Auburn Table Tennis Club   -

Welcome more new players  - Debbie Detmar, finding us with the assistance of Tamara Chappell (thank you Tamara).  Debbie also delivered two aspiring athletes, sons Zak and Trent.  Trent and Zak joined Roland, Torsten and Jackson for a fine youth group of 5 this past Monday.   And that’s not all … the Tabers (James and Kevin) have spread the word and Zachary Aubochon responded with a visit this week too.  And not to be outdone, Wed. RR play welcomed Vitaly Lalak, new to the US but not new to this sport, as well.

Annual Club Meeting:  was held this past Wed., just prior to Round Robin.  A few items for further discussion, including possibly adding an occasional evening or even a weekend, for round robin style play.  The demotion party was brief, but without the need to impose a “no fly zone,” and the opposition forces were not well armed, by any stretch.  Newly elected are the following:

PresidentTom Spesick; TreasurerBill Kochenderfer; SecretaryLarry Scott;  Directors (a few; check the web site for the whole slate) - Orientation – Michael Carlson; Special Events (yes, that means pizza, Ron Mallory) – Bill Indreboe.  Our financial house remains in order and our playing numbers remain consistent.

A vote was taken and we approved the addition of a twice annual Sportsmanship Award, to be given at the same time as the “Best Record” and “Most Improved” (so, end of June and end of December).  Thank you Dave Ganguly for this suggestion.

Round Robin Report:

Group 4 – Chamy Poveda sweeps the group to get the win.

Group 3 – Bob Hemming sweeps his way onto Table 2 next week.

Group 2 – Anson Kwong completes the trifecta and sweeps the group.

Group 1 – No clear winner as Grant Connell and Sergey Tsvor were tied 2-2 and starting their 5th game when we ran out of time, and both finish the evening 2-1.

USATT Membership – If you need to renew (or join) for tournament purposes, see Bill K.  We can do this through Auburn Table Tennis Club and save you a few bucks in the process.

For Wed. night, - if you will be late (after 6:45 pm), be sure to call   Tom at 530-613-0101 or Bill (916-275-0899) and let them know.  If you reach us, we will get you on a table.
