hi all,

congratulations to tom spesick who was runner up in the under 1750 singles this past weekend at the sacramento summer open. also coming in second was j.z. in the hardbat open. also showing well was micah chavez who got to the semis in 2 singles events.

if your opponent is serving illegally such as from his fingers (instead of a flat palm) or you are pretty certain he/she is striking the ball on its way up, catch the ball and advise him/her and play a let. if it becomes chronic advise myself, tom or bill k.

as this is a club operated entirely by unpaid volunteers, it is incumbent on all players to do their share in helping out. the general rule is that if youre physically fit to play then you are fit to put away tables and or corrugated. many of us do not feel like doing this after a long night of exhausting matches but we do. the fact that almost 100% of our players do put out this effort draws conspicuous attention to the one or two that dont. if you honestly believe that you cannot contribute in this way, see me and i am sure we can find tasks that would benefit the club.

if on a wednesday evening, you think you will be late, please call bill (916) 275-0899, or myself (530) 878-2602. if you reach us, we will put you on a table.

congratulations to group winners: glenn johnson and tyler spesick.

hi all,

since the club relaxed its age requirements, you might notice players roaming around that are quite young, please help them feel comfortable. larry scott continues his private/semi-private coaching clinic next week. he has an opening for one student. his charge is $30/hr. larry is a credentialed club instructor.

this saturday is a 2 star tournament in sacramento and we wish our players the best of fortune.

we have not stressed lately the need to serve legally. this is especially critical in the top 2 groups. we must serve the ball out of a flat palm and not gripped in our fingers which allows for additional spin and speed to be imparted on the ball and is illegal. there is always controversy over the height one tosses the ball. legally it is just over 6 inches. this is very difficult for an observer to quantify. the important intent in this rule is to be able to judge that the ball is struck on its downward descent. as long as this is discernable, i would not get too excited about the height. if you opponent is serving from his fingers or you are pretty certain he/she is striking the ball on its way up, catch the ball and advise him/her and play a let. if it becomes chronic advise myself, tom or bill k.
