hi all,

last wednesday evening we held our fall return to table tennis event. it was attended beyond many of our expectations with 37 players stopping buy. they ranged from brand new players who read our recent journal article to special invitees from sacramento to some of our players not seen for months. also observing was an ard board member and the district administrator for ard. i think we all had a great time and look forward to our new guests returning and more frequent visits from some of our other players.

it was a real treat to watch and learn from scott gordon from sacramento, playing singles and doubles with jz zhuang, thanh nguyen and jordan tsang, and giving a few tips to players along the way. we thank all these superb players for sharing some time in auburn.

the 2 out of 3 format for singles and doubles play did seem to move things along well, and despite having a lot of players, we did get in a lot of play. a fair number of consolation bracket matches were played, too. by 10 p.m. when we needed to button up the facility, we probably had one more match to determine the open winner a good sportsmanship move that leaves open just who reigns as club champ for the night. likewise in doubles, despite seeing a good number of matches being played, time prevailed before victory. tom and tyler spesick were on their way to glory, however. in the under 800 bracket, david kochenderfer made it through to call himself king of the hill for this evening. equally noteworthy, we had 5 or 6 brand new players in that grouping of 18, and we certainly expect to see those folks again soon.

a special thanks to bill kochenderfer for all the effort he put in to see that it was a success.

due to back-to-back vacations by our web master-tom spesick and yours truly the weekly web updates will also be on vacation for about 5 weeks. everything else will be running smoothly with bill indreboe assisted by bill kochenderfer will run the wednesday evening program during my absence.

hi all,

please mark 9/26 and join us for our fall extravaganza - back to table tennis night . free pizza and soft drinks along with some special events are planned. our regular round robin will not be conducted and usual fees apply.

pursuant to actions required from our last meeting, i have updated the ratings of 20 of our players whom also have usatt ratings. this should, overtime, more accurately reflect each players standing in the broader table tennis universe.

please do your best to bring correct change for your fees. with our low numbers on wednesdays, we quite often get caught with just higher denomination bills.

if you opponent is serving illegally such as from his fingers (instead of a flat palm) or you are pretty certain he/she is striking the ball on its way up, catch the ball and advise him/her and play a let. if it becomes chronic advise myself, tom or bill k. there are several reasons to encourage legal serves at all times during play.  first, legal serves are required in any tournament setting and it behooves all of us to serve in the standard, approved fashion, to develop and maintain good habits. second, illegal serves can provide a distinct advantage to the server (particularly no-toss serves or hidden ball serves) and/or a distinct disadvantage to the receiver (who does not get a reasonable chance to see the ball and prepare for the serve). if you believe you are serving illegally, there is nothing wrong with asking for guidance - that is one of the club objectives.

if on a wednesday evening, you think you will be late, please call bill (916) 275-0899, or myself (530) 878-2602. if you reach us, we will put you on a table.

congratulations to group winners: jz, tim aquino, daniel silva and madison kochenderfer in our youth group.
