happy halloween auburn table tennis club members -

all the news that’s fit to print   you’ll find it here.  bay bridge falling down?  who cares.  placer v. lincoln big game? fun, but irrelevant.   this is table tennis country.  good crowds for monday and wednesday evening play continue to make their way to the canyon view community center.  equipment is in good shape and there is good play at all levels and ages.  our “loaner paddle” supply is strong, if you are starting out and want to experiment with some gear.  welcome this past monday to ed and chiao-lin cabanne, frequent visitors to the howe park club in sacramento, but residing in roseville and by golly, we are closer to reach.  no doubt this has to be the most affordable 3 hours of exercise you can get - $3 mondays (adults); $4 wednesdays (adults).  or come both days and pay a flat rate of $5.  independent nobel-prize awarded medical researchers have verified that table tennis players live longer and enjoy a better quality of life than the average person.

wed. oct. 28 – round robin results – group 5dominic moon (dominic, we apologize for that remark above about placer v. lincoln) fought off an assault by max fagan, got by the top seed, and prevails this week.  group 4 – upsets were in order – middle seed david ho lost only one game on his way to a 4-0 result and 54 point gain.  is this a break-through or a fluke?  you be the judge, next wed. night, when he hits table 3.   no sign of kris han, and we are informed he has injured an ankle and will be out a few weeks.  kris, if this is your way of avoiding playing david … we like it and i am going to use this myself.  group 3billy tang made sure nobody could claim a victory here.  no clear winner, but ricky p. continues to flail about with a hardbat that is claiming more victims.   group 2 – every match went as seeded.  interesting games, with 8 out of 10 matches being won 3-0.  moving up to table 1 – bill k. now hear this: group 1 – almost nothing went as planned (at least, statistically).  tom spesick, low seed (and club vice-president) provided a brief tutorial on pre-game stretching and proceeded to run the group.  nice work tom.  do note that the president won table 2, and the vice-president won table 1, which clearly should tell you, becoming an officer at this club will help your game.  keep that in mind and attend our next meeting (details down the road).

“most improved – jp sneaks into 1st place at the moment, followed by anson and madison.   billy tang jumps to 4th place (123 point gain since july 1); others in the hunt too.

table put away reminder:   if you end a match late in the evening on a table that may be “done” for the evening, do please take down the net and fold up the table.  watch the feet adjusters that unscrew and can fall off.

for wednesdays -  if you think you will be late for the round robin (i.e. after 7 p.m), please call bill (916) 275-0899 or tom (530) 613-0101.   if you reach us, we will put you on a table.

greetings auburn table tennis club members -

welcome new player patrice tournier   you may guess from his slight accent that he is not from around here.  well, not originally.  patrice’s background in table tennis includes club competition, which has sparked more than a small interest in a few at the club.

table set-up; put away – quick thank you to all, and it is most everyone, who are pitching in on table set up and put away.  keep a close eye on the wheels, please; they can be adjusted and if they are getting loose, they can be difficult to maneuver.  the butterfly (green top) table is the only one with a designated spot (main room, 1st table) as the leg lifts have been measured for the huge crater it sits in.  all others go where they go.  the butterfly table has its own net (brown); all the rest are blue.  don’t be bashful about asking for a pointer on the net assemblies if they are falling apart.

wed. oct. 21 – round robin results – for the second week straight, anson dominated group 1.  rumor has it that some “undisclosed” training is going on.  nonetheless, congratulations anson and we are doing our level best to attract competitive players to receive an “ak” thrashing.  tom spesick, paying a rare visit to table 2, prevailed there, in the face of ricky working through and improving his hardbat hitting, and the rapidly-getting-back-in-shape play of patrice tournier.  we spotted some backhand loops; this will be on the highlights video.  group 3 – every match went to the favored seed; sorry fred, we knew you were hoping for an upset, or two.  congratulations doug vaughan and table 2 awaits you next week.  mark copeland gets special recognition for playing every match to 5 games (indeed, 7 of the 10 matches in group 3 went to 5 games, so obviously expert bracketing was done; you are welcome).   group 4 – jp solly, with doug, representing grass valley club well and now looking for scalps on table 3.  group 5 – dylan moon takes the honors and the best rating gain of the night, 26 fresh points.  nicely done.  we ended up with open play until 9:45 p.m., for some reason; nobody left who was not worn out.

quick note on wed. round robin play – our executive committee determined some time ago that the optimum number of players per group is 4 or 5, so we do try to stick to that.  from time to time, depending on the total number of players (and available tables) and a spur-of-the-moment straw poll, we do sometimes put larger groups together.  we have (and will again) also put large groups (8 or 9 players) together as a team, on a special night to be designated, for a team competition.

“check the records” – do please take a glance from time to time (we know some of you study in detail, which may be overboard) the rr results.  if your match result is incorrect, email wkochenderfer@cs.com.  mistakes (few, ok, maybe one in the last 8 or 9 years) have been made.  they can be fixed (up to the date of the next rr).  also, if you cannot complete your matches, or are short on time, do let your group know; they may be able to accelerate your matches so you get out earlier.  not the best way to do the rr, but works in a pinch from time to time.  if you do depart early, unplayed matches are not recorded (i.e. no “default” is counted).  however, if you start a match and need to stop – for injury or emergency – let tom spesick or bill k know this.  if you abandon play without injury or emergency, that would result in a “loss” in that match.  we are a terribly casual club, so this is mainly about playing etiquette and courtesy.  we try and assure everyone is playing, matches are moving along, and the evening is finished relatively timely.

“most improved” – looks like anson, jp and madison lead a group, though bob hemming (106), eric stefanic (103), grant connell (89) and billy tang (74) are all in the running here.  priceless awards will be given out in january, 2010.   we also have a “best record” recognition, based on the won/loss percentage.  we are working on how to extract data to make that calculation.  so far, on a rough look, lu li is at about 71%.  both categories require you to play at least 15 times at the club during the 6 month period.

for wednesdays -  if you think you will be late for the round robin (i.e. after 7 p.m), please call bill (916) 275-0899 or tom (530) 613-0101.   if you reach us, we will put you on a table.

hello rain soaked auburn table tennis club members -

welcome new players:   joining us this past monday for the first time was jimmy han (father of kris han) and steve pladson (family friend of kris).  we saw some fine play going on, plus a genuine smithsonian-ready 38 mm ball.  always good to have historical background.

speaking of kris han – thank you kris for looking into t shirts for our club.  looks like we can have some decent ones made up.  suitable for use at the club, of course.  logo on the front.  something witty and engaging on the back?  not so sure, yet, but if you have some ideas on this, let us know - or see kris on a monday or wednesday evening and share your wisdom.  i have a feeling these shirts may make a perfect christmas gift.  just a feeling.

wed. oct. 14 – round robin results – anson dominated group 1.  urgent message to lu li – please be here next week to help us bring anson down to earth.  we fear he is starting to enjoy these victories and we cannot have him getting used to that.  billy tang – nice work on your maiden voyage to group 1; taking a few games here and there is a good start.    group 2 – eric stefanic has abandoned his circa 1975 vintage paddle and now wields a bloody bat that packs a punch and a spin or two.  nice work doug vaughan getting 2 games off of him.  that was the best anyone could do in the group.   maybe eric’s old paddle and that 38 mm ball can be in the same museum display.  group 3 – what a wild night.  did somebody spike the water fountain?  of 10 matches played, only 3 went according to seeding.  kris han cleaned up 4-0 in matches (must be somehow related to his commitment to our club, t-shirts, bringing his father to play …).  however, strange results were the norm:   fred got by top seed david ho, then went down swinging in 5 games each of the next 3 matches, all to lower ranked players.  madison k. parlayed her hour of training monday with john hanna into a 60 point rating gain wed night.  john, send the bill for that directly to madison.  and remember, those you train today will be back to kick our butts in about 6 months.  so don’t give all the secrets away.  stephan wolf, not far behind with a 45 point jump, nice hitting.  all goes to show that practice and perseverance makes perfect, or at least it makes you better and better.

check out the “latest results” link; we are showing more data now.  we will have our semi annual awards for most improved and best record, and i will post the current leaders in the next news.

for wednesdays -  if you think you will be late for the round robin (i.e. after 7 p.m), please call bill (916) 275-0899 or tom (530) 613-0101.   if you reach us, we will put you on a table.

wed. oct. 7 – round robin results – most of the top seeds in the groups prevailed.  congratulations to lu li, bill k., billy t. (clearly being named bill is an advantage at our club), kris h., and tim paras.  very nice to see players from sept. 30 round robin return to claim their bounty – moving up a table.  remember, if you win your group, you automatically are moved up a table the following week.  can’t skip a week though; has to be the next week.

suggestions?  comments? requests?  the club is here for one purpose and one purpose only: “to promote the great sport of table tennis.”  if you have an idea that should be run up the flagpole, don’t be shy, let us know.  email is fine, nothing wrong with grabbing one of us by the ear, too – your vice-president tom spesick; treasurer (and past president and co-founder) tim aquino; secretary larry scott.  plenty of other “old timers” and regulars as well.
