hi all, ron mallory has decided to take a break from his monday night responsibilities. i am sure we all thank ron for his many months of opening the club on mondays. ron may talk with you regarding taking over for him. currently bob grittner assures that the club closes properly, so what will be missing is that person who sees that the club opens and that tables are set up (there is always plenty of help for this). filling this function also places you on the steering committee. please do your best to bring correct change for your fees. we quite often get caught with just higher denomination bills. we have had a series of evenings when the cash in the kitty did not equal the attendance. please remember to sign in and pay as soon as the sign-in sheet is available. adults-$4; juniors-$2 and no guest privileges on wednesdays. if your opponent is serving illegally such as from his fingers (instead of a flat palm) or you are pretty certain he/she is striking the ball on its way up, catch the ball and advise him/her and play a let. if it becomes chronic advise myself, tom or bill k. there are several reasons to encourage legal serves at all times during play. first, legal serves are required in any tournament setting and it behooves all of us to serve in the standard, approved fashion. second, illegal serves can provide a distinct advantage to the server (particularly no-toss serves or hidden ball serves) and/or a distinct disadvantage to the receiver (who does not get a reasonable chance to see the ball and prepare for the serve). if you believe you are serving illegally, there is nothing wrong with asking for guidance - that is one of the club objectives. if on a wednesday evening, you think you will be late, please call bill (916) 275-0899, or myself (530) 878-2602. if you reach us, we will put you on a table. congratulations to group winners: tom spesick, bill indreboe, gene cavanna and jon saunders.

hi all, a huge crowd of 22 played this past monday. ron and bob must be doing something right! if mondays continue to draw large numbers and you have any ideas to allow all players equal access to playing time let them know. please do your best to bring correct change for your fees. we quite often get caught with just higher denomination bills. if your opponent is serving illegally such as from his fingers (instead of a flat palm) or you are pretty certain he/she is striking the ball on its way up, catch the ball and advise him/her and play a let. if it becomes chronic advise myself, tom or bill k. there are several reasons to encourage legal serves at all times during play. first, legal serves are required in any tournament setting and it behooves all of us to serve in the standard, approved fashion. second, illegal serves can provide a distinct advantage to the server (particularly no-toss serves or hidden ball serves) and/or a distinct disadvantage to the receiver (who does not get a reasonable chance to see the ball and prepare for the serve). if you believe you are serving illegally, there is nothing wrong with asking for guidance - that is one of the club objectives. if on a wednesday evening, you think you will be late, please call bill (916) 275-0899, or myself (530) 878-2602. if you reach us, we will put you on a table. congratulations to group winners: tom spesick, ricky pisanu and steven fender.

our traditional round robin wednesday evening events were suspended on october 24, 2007, for a team table tennis night, crafted by bill indreboe and larry scott, where all players in attendance were split up in to two evenly matched teams. the teams were blue and orange. all of the players on the orange team played all of the players on the blue team (and the blue team members played all the orange team members), best 2 out of 3. the event was informally handicapped. no rankings were impacted. our crack staff of retired mit numerologists have compiled the results of this event, and have determined that the orange team indeed prevailed. no coincidence that bill indreboe and larry scott were both orange team members, and no coincidence that the only scoresheets from the event were given to bill kochenderfer, also an orange team member, and no coincidence that the club website and email is managed by tom spesick, also an orange team member. it does pay to be on the team with clout. in fact, the "games won" tally was 77 for the blue (vince cavanna, tyler spesick, glenn johnson, jz, ken silva, jon saunders, dave mead and mike giangreco) and 59 games for the mighty orange team (bob grittner, tom spesick, larry scott, bill kochenderfer, bill indreboe, ron mallory, daniel silva and steve fender). however, there was an additional 20 tally points available to award based on sportsmanship and decorum, and all 20 were awarded to the orange team, resulting in a narrow 79 to 77 victory for the orange team. way to go, orangemen (and boys). your trophies are being sent ups. blue team, maybe next time. we return to regular round robin wed. oct. 31. open play monday oct. 29 as usual, of course. we look forward to seeing you!
