greeting
to the ever expanding auburn table tennis club
-
plenty of excited and excitable players - as young as 13 and as old as, well,
… some things are kept
confidential. suffice to say it is
possible that we have a player who might be a world war i veteran. at least, this is what his dad tells us
(yes, a very old joke, no pun intended).
also, spanning the globe – east, west, north and south, pick a
country, we’ve probably had a player from there.
mondays have averaged a little over 18 players since august. wednesdays are drawing almost 24,
with a round robin of 30 as the high count. we had 27 this past wednesday (28 if i
had passed math in high school, but that is another story).
welcome austin trenkamp and
robert ighut, 1st timers this past week. welcome back after a long sabbatical to
colin douglas. colin, if that work
schedule keeps interfering with your ability to get here, let us know. we have people on retainer who will
speak with your employer and you could end up with loads of free time. whatever it takes, we’re there for
you. robert was checking us out
from arizona, courtesy of marciano degamo. nice of robert to forget his paddle
… we’ll get it back to him.
also nice to see huang moon checking in briefly on his
boys dominic and dylan. so
far, dylan has a 5-2 match record against dominic, in case you were wondering.
as the numbers hit the 25 to 30 range on wednesdays, it does become more
important to stay close to “your” table and be ready to keep
matches rolling along. if the next
scheduled match cannot start because one player is still in a match on another
table, please skip to the next playable match so the tables stay active. our numbers should not be a
“problem” unless we push above 30. that is a good problem to have, however,
and we have contingency plans ready.
nicely done – john hanna – returning with some
hardware from los angeles
this past weekend, taking 1st
place (and a heavy trophy might we add) for the
“over 40” bracket.
that’s no walkover.
new players – if you are interested in some hitting practice and
maybe a pointer or two (or three), just ask john; he has done plenty of
coaching and has the same enthusiasm encouraging a new player as he does
playing in a final. enough about john, however. must be careful or he may want a red
carpet and dancing girls for his arrival to the club.
wed. round robin – congratulations and well
played to: colin douglas (group 5), not too rusty after the lay off; stephan
wolf (group 4), edging fred myers 3-2 in the crucial match; larry scott
(group 2), setting himself up for a long overdue return to table 1 next week; john
hanna (group 1), riding the glory of his weekend victory, we presume. in the “we knew this would
happen” category, patrice tournier gave
most of group 1 a run for their money, grabbing 42 rating points in the
process.
thank you to the several players wed. that caught up on the
ious! we have our eye on a spry
little electric car for the club president. don’t give us any grief, we refused
the tarp money. seriously, however,
we do keep track of things and occasionally get a knuckle rapping from our
treasurer tim aquino if the dollars don’t add up.
“most improved” – billy tang leads this
charge now. there may be no
stopping him. he has been spotted
at other clubs, getting extra work out and round robin time. madison and jp follow, for the moment.
for
wednesdays - if you think
you will be late for the round robin (i.e. after 7 p.m),
please call bill (916) 275-0899 or tom (530) 613-0101. if you reach us, we will put you on a
table.
